NIST SP 800-53A Revision 5 provides the methodology for assessing security and privacy controls in information systems. The current edition was finalized on January 25, 2022, with a minor release 5.2.0 issued on August 27, 2025. Assessors use defined objectives, methods, and objects to determine if controls are satisfied or other than satisfied. The publication allows organizations to tailor the depth and coverage of assessments based on risk categorization.
